Philosophy & Principles

Our Guiding Principle: In Budokan, integrity and humility matter more than grade.

Budokan Philosophy

Our philosophy shapes our thinking.

Budokan Karate is built on scientific understanding — biomechanics and exercise physiology.

Tradition is respected, but it began as innovation. We do not allow tradition to limit progress.

The Budokan Principles

Our principles guide how we act.

Karate Budokan International is guided by a clear set of principles that define how we train, lead, and conduct ourselves.

They are not rules to follow, but standards to live by.

RISE — What We Stand For

Respect

Earned through conduct, not grade.

Let your actions define you — not your title.

Integrity

Act with honesty, consistency, and accountability.

Integrity is not situational — it is constant.

Service (with Humility)

Work together in harmony and serve others with humility.

Remain open to learning, contribute to a united organisation, and lead without ego.

Excellence

Commit to continuous improvement in skill, teaching, and character.

Standards are not maintained — they are continually raised.

A Personal Note

In Richard Chew’s business, Elixr Health Club in Bondi Junction, Sydney, he follows a similar set of values known as RICE — Respect, Integrity, Care, and Excellence.

Care is the mindful and considerate way we treat others, choosing words and actions that support their wellbeing and nurture harmony.

These values have shaped his approach to leadership and continue to influence the standards upheld within Karate Budokan International.

A Shared Standard

These principles form the foundation of KBI.

They guide our decisions, shape our culture, and define the standard we expect of ourselves and each other.

Our aim is not to build the largest organisation, but one that is respected — through its conduct, its standards, and the character of its members.
