Why do we practice One-Step and Three-Step sparring?

These drills are not fighting training. They are teaching tools:

  1. Distance: Learn to feel your partner enter range and move into the right position.
  2. Control: Learn to attack when required, or counter accurately. Control is what makes power usable.
  3. Block and counter: A block isn’t the end of a technique, it’s the beginning of the next.
  4. Critics say they’re unrealistic. True, but a musician plays scales before improvising. These drills are our scales.
  5. Attack with sincerity, defend with awareness, finish with control. Train with patience, and the value will reveal itself.
